Entering a new region is easier when you know what to prepare. This checklist outlines the building blocks Hungarian medical device and pharmaceutical companies should have in place before — and during — their move into the GCC.
1. Clarify your positioning
Before anything else, be able to explain in one or two sentences what you do, who it is for and why it matters. If a busy hospital director cannot grasp your value in thirty seconds, refine the message.
2. Get your documentation in order
Have your core materials ready and professional:
- Company profile and credentials
- Product catalogue with clear specifications
- Regulatory status and certifications
- Clinical evidence, references and case studies
3. Understand the regulatory pathway
Each GCC country has its own registration and approval requirements for medical devices and pharmaceuticals. You do not need to master all of them on day one, but you should understand the broad pathway for your priority market and plan timelines realistically.
4. Choose a primary entry market
Decide where you will focus first. Many companies start in Bahrain for its connectivity and direct access to Saudi Arabia, then expand from there.
5. Line up local representation
Identify who will represent you on the ground — arranging meetings, attending them, and following up. Without local presence, even strong products lose momentum.
6. Build a relationship map
List the people and organisations you need to reach: hospitals, clinics, distributors, investors, decision-makers and relevant government-related entities. Real entry is about connecting with the right people in the right order.
7. Plan meetings and delegations
Decide how you will meet partners — B2B meetings (online and in person), delegations, and curated events all play a role. Face-to-face contact builds the trust that drives Gulf business.
8. Commit to follow-up
The deal is rarely done in the first meeting. Build a cadence of follow-up and keep showing up. Persistence and presence are what separate companies that break through from those that fade.
9. Think long term
Treat the GCC as a multi-year commitment. The companies that win are those that invest in relationships and stay the course.
